Angelus Apatrida, an Album by Angelus Apatrida. Released 5 February 2021 on Century Media. Genres: Thrash Metal. Rated #422 in the best albums of 2021. Thrash metal seems to be rumbling into a resurgence of late. Following the breakout success of POWER TRIP last year, onlookers will be licking their lips, poising themselves to capitalise on the genre’s returning popularity. Spanish thrashers ANGELUS APATRIDA are one such band. Whilst never quite hitting the heights as other players in the scene, thanks to a wealth of experience, 18 years to be precise, if there’s anyone ready to jump on the bubbling momentum and buzz surrounding thrash in recent times, it’s them. And with their sixth record, Cabaret De La Guillotine, the Spanish quartet give it a mighty good go. Cabaret De La Guillotine is full throttle affair. Following a delicate and brooding introduction, opening track Sharpen The Guillotine wastes no time in setting the scene through the galloping riffs from David G. Álvarez and Guillermo Izquierdo, with the former dispatching some excellent vocal work before subsiding into a roaring guitar solo. It’s trademark thrash; gutsy and manic and keeps the one overtly violent. A good start to the record indeed. Sharpen The Guillotine is a great opening but it’s only a tremor when compared to the sheer seismic force that follows. Betrayed is an absolute belter of a track. Boasting slick and intricate riffing that makes up the backbone of the song, the seamless swings in tempo and triumphant soaring chorus make it an instant standout, whilst Ministry of God is an entirely different beast. ANGELUS APATRIDA hit top gear on this track thanks to a blitz of hard-hitting riffing whilst blistering drumming from Víctor Valera resembles machine gun fire. It’s a whirlwind experience and it’s hard not to be swept up in the mayhem. Hard hitting riffs are clearly the order of the day here and ANGELUS APATRIDA deliver them in absolute abundance. The guitarwork from both Álvarez and Izquierdo on this record is simply sublime as the pair dispatch neck-snapping riffs and jaw-dropping solos with absolute ease. The solo on The Hum is simply spectacular showcasing the skill at the band’s disposal whilst the riffs dispatched on Downfall of the Nation pack enough power to level a city. For a genre like thrash, good riffs are absolutely essential and ANGENLUS APATRIDA more than demonstrate their prowess on this record. That’s not to say that the other aspects to their sound are weak. Víctor Valera and José J. Izquierdo performances on the drums and bass respectively are consistently strong, never buckling under the blistering rhythm, and Guillermo Izquierdo‘s vocal work is equally impressive. Izquierdo has a subtlety to his vocal work that goes so much further than your typical thrash metal vocalist with a range of styles explored across the record that never shatter the intensity. One of Us displays a range of high pitched shrieks that sound akin to the likes of HAVOK whilst the gut-punching lows showcased in the chorus of The Hum would make Chuck Billy proud. Even the utilisation of NWOBHM-esque cleans in The Die Is Cast don’t feel out of character, which really hammers home the versatility at his disposal. It breathes a sense of class and character into the record and makes it stand apart from being just another trademark thrash record. Yet, Cabaret De La Guillotine is not a perfect record. At the album’s crucial final third, things become stale and as a result, the band fall at a crucial hurdle. Witching Hour‘s six minute run-time stretches the track out unnecessarily, the sharp tempo changes to a mid-tempo slog in the track’s chorus buckles the momentum completely, and with the only saving grace being a snappy solo that recaptures your attention for just a snippet, it’s fair to say this track falls flat compared to the earlier bombardments. To make matters worse, Farewell is just a complete misfire. Serving as the ‘ballad’ of the record, the track feels completely out of place on the record and if it wasn’t for the explosive final bout of Martyrs of Chicago, then the record’s conclusion would be incredibly weak. Aside from several misfires, Cabaret De La Guillotine is a very strong offering from ANGELUS APATRIDA. Explosive, gut-punching and full of killer moments, this is a record that encapsulates the very essence of what makes thrash so exhilarating and you’d be surprised if Cabaret De La Guillotine didn’t cement their place amongst the heavy hitters in the scene. For those that crave speed and riffs that will cause a serious case of whiplash, this is the record for you. Enviado por keysersöze el Mar, 08/05/2018 - 13:47 573 Hay pocas cosas en la España actual que me hagan enorgullecer por mi país, pero por suerte los cabrones albaceteños de ANGELUS APATRIDA vuelven con material calentito recién sacado del horno para que al menos podamos decir que la facturación metalera de la piel de toro es cojonuda, manque hermanos Izquierdo y colegas no se desarrollen con nuestra lengua cervantina. Hecho del todo irrelevante por otro lado si lo que nos ofrecen es otro pelotazo en su discografía para continuar con esta asombrosa racha que al fin y al cabo empezó ya con su entrañable debut. Uno aquí los descubrió con “Clockwork” cuando se encargaron de abrir para SLAYER y MEGADETH en la ciudad condal, y pese haber mutado su thrash, bendita sea esta transformación hacia tesituras algo más melódicas aunque igualmente bien facturadas, las cosas como son. Habrá quien les eche en cara lo recién mentado, mas creo sinceramente que somos mayoría los que les aplaudimos su evolución, pues tanto “The Call” como “Hidden Evolution” aún con sus matices son dos pedazos de plásticos. Un reto mayúsculo al que se enfrentan con esta su nueva entrega. Y parece que ya sólo con la estupenda carátula de este genial “Cabaret de la Guillotine" nos quieran advertir que esta vez también habrán detallitos por los que se nos haga la boca agua deseando degustar ya el material. Una ambientación a lo Revolución Francesa con segundas hacia la situación actual. Ya con el single que nos pudimos calzar en anterioridad “Sharpen the Guillotine” catamos una lírica muy social a la par que tremendamente hostil y agresiva. Esto es thrash, coleguitas, quien busque otra cosa advertido está, oiga. Lo que no quita que me sorprendieron esas voces de Guillermo totalmente limpias, que quedan de lujo, por otro lado. Otra que pudimos degustar previamente con videoclip incluido fue “Downfall of the Nation”. Corte que nos ratifica la fórmula empleada por la banda en esta su sexta placa (como pasa el tiempo, nen) y que nos hace caer rendidos al instante ante semejante torbellino sónico que sintetiza estupendamente bien lo que es la banda a día de hoy. Mucho poso a los PANTERA de comienzos de los noventa, cosa que no es de extrañar pues el groove siempre ha tenido su huequecito en sus placas (aunque si bien es cierto que en “Hidden Evolution, para nada). Supongo que a estas alturas de la película ya sabrán los muy apreciados lectores la magnitud de la banda que aquí nos concierne. Pero como que nunca está de más el hecho de reiterar a los seguidores de bandas como MEGADETH, OVERKILL o TESTAMENT que los albaceteños valen mucho la pena. Y más aún cuando te calzas “Farewell” (última carta de presentación antes del estrellato definitivo) y te das cuenta de la magnitud de la banda al ofrecernos una señora balada de sombrerazo. Hecho a destacar sin lugar a dudas, pues corrijanme si erro, pero estamos ante la primera composición de este calibre en la banda. Y reitero lo bien que quedan las voces de Guillermo. No será de los mejores en tales labores, pero lo que se lo curra no está escrito. No negará uno que pese la total satisfacción de estos tres cortes, había ciertas dudas por donde iban a tirar los derroteros del álbum, pues al fin y al cabo los tres avances eran de lo más variopintos. Pero puede estar tranquila la parroquia thrasher, pues aquí hay ANGELUS APATRIDA para rato, queridos. Cojonudas “Betrayed” y “Ministry of God” que suenan a ellos cien por cien. Así como la siguiente “The Hum” y “The Die is Cast”, que ambas dejan entrever unas melodías algo más definidas y melosas pero de una exquisitez superlativa. Sobretodo la segunda mentada que hará las delicias del personal, pues lo que vicia la jodía no está escrito, tu. Aunque si hay aquí algún corte que me haya sorprendido por encima del resto este sería “One of Us”. Menudo pelotazo. Ejemplo de como hacer thrash metal en nuestros días, sonando fresco, moderno y, lo más importante, sin perder la esencia, la tralla y la caña burra que nos hace gozar como enanos. Sensación que me evoca también (aunque en menor medida, eso sí) una “Witching Hour” juguetona y, probablemente comercial, muy en la onda del thrash noventero que tan bien facturaron METALLICA en su placa homónima o los MEGADETH del “Countdown to Extinction”. Rematan todo esto aquí relatado con una “Martyrs of Chicago” que a servidor personalmente no le ha parecido nada del otro mundo, más allá de tratarse de un corte que, como todos los que nos concierne, está perfectamente bien trabajado. Demasiado coqueteo con el metalcore le palpo al invento. Cosa nada de extrañar, por otro lado, pues al fin y al cabo no se puede negar que la presencia de dicho género en la actualidad es destacada. Lo que no quita que me sepa mal que una obra como ésta no culmine de forma apoteósica. Llegados a este punto, que más me da si estamos enfrente su mejor trabajo. Esto es una auténtica gozada que sí de bien seguro será de los mejores lanzamientos de la temporada. Muy bien deberían ir las cosas en nuestro género favorito para que tal sentencia no se cumpliera. Aunque oigan, por soñar… Lo que está claro es que nuestros queridos albaceteños están en un momento de forma encomiable y se erigen (si es que no lo habían hecho hace años ya) como una de las formaciones más interesantes del thrash metal, y no solo se refiere uno al panorama estatal. ANGELUS APATRIDA son ya por derecho propio uno de las expresiones más fiables del género que disco a disco (y van seis pelotazos ya) nos ofrecen toda una lección de cómo el metal lejos de estar muerto está más vivo que nunca. Así pues y sin más preámbulos, 4 cornamentas altas no, lo siguiente, para este “Cabaret de la Guillotine”. Un trabajo que entra aún mejor con todo el trasfondo político y social que alberga en el interior. Disfrutémoslo ahora que podemos, quién sabe si la censura se percata de la existencia de esto nos lo vayan a prohibir. Aunque claro, con lo cortitos que son, duda uno que puedan llegar a pillar la dimensión de este pedazo de obra. Malos tiempos para la lírica que dirían Golpes Bajos, pero cojonudos para ANGELUS APATRIDA y que así sea por muchos años más, oigan. Ganazas de calzármelos en alguna de sus próximas descargas.
